The King's Trophy game is recognized by the state as Montgomery County's fiercest. In 2006 alone, The Northwest-Seneca Valley game was considered the "Game of The Week" by WUSA TV9 Operation Football, The MD Examiner, The Gazette, The Washington Post, The Sentinel, and VOLI Sports. It was televised on Montgomery Cable News 21 and made available for viewers on Comcast Local OnDEMAND & Verizon Fios.

THE BATTLE FOR GERMANTOWN ...
THE BATTLE FOR THE KING'S TROPHY.

Arguably one of the best and most exciting rivalries in Maryland high school football today is the Seneca Valley-Northwest game known as the battle for The King's Trophy.

DRAWING THE LINE
In October of 1997, students of over-crowded Seneca Valley High School were separated in different classrooms by the elementary school district they lived in.
All sophomores and freshmen who went to elementary schools south of Wisteria Drive will be going to the new high school that will open in Germantown. Many of these students went to the same middle schools together. Many of the football players played for what was once the only youth sports organization in Germantown, Seneca Sports Association.

FUEL TO THE FIRE
The final practice of the 1997 Seneca Valley JV team ended with the traditional "Sophomore hits"- a post-season ritual where sophomores lined up a few yards away and picked freshman they thought would replace them the following year. Pads were laid down, the distance was not far enough for someone to get a unnecessarily violent shot. Included that day was a separate line for Northwest players. Players who were sure to be playing for Seneca Valley were given a shot at a Northwest player who will be replacing them the following year. The rest of the school year consisted of then-Eagles head coach Terry Changuris referring to NW prospectives as, "bluebirds."

NO ORDINARY RIVAL
There was a time when Seneca Valley, winner of a Maryland record twelve State Championships, dominated Germantown and every high school football team that surrounded it. They withstood the test of time and the building of new schools that took away neigbhborhoods that Seneca Valley drew students and future players from. There was a time when older schools Damascus was the only school north and the only other team nearest to it was Gaithersburg High School. Ever since then, Watkins Mill, Quince Orchard, Northwest, and now Clarksburg High Schools share a piece of the talent pie of upper Montgomery County.
Even still, Seneca Valley dominated the competition and held unsurpassed winning records against all the schools, except one.

THE FINAL STATEMENT
Northwest is the only team that has stayed competitive and kept Seneca Valley from running away with the series victories. After nine years, neither team has taken more than a two-game lead in the series. And because of it, the annual battle between the only two schools in the growing city of Germantown is the place to be on Friday nights.

THE EVENTS LEADING TO THE BIRTH OF A TROPHY
By Michael Cornejo

It hadn’t always been known as “The Battle for the King’s Trophy.” The rivalry was evident from the start, but a traveling trophy between two teams did not appear until 2001.
After the Jaguars suffered a crushing defeat in 1999, I wrote a story that metaphorically and purposely resembled the growing rivalry between Northwest and Seneca Valley. It was about a pride of lions that competed for food that was rapidly becoming scarce. The pride eventually was split into two and it was one group of lions wanting to prove that both prides can co-exist. I sent the story to Coach Trivers on Seneca Valley week in 2000 and it became an added substance to what was already a thoroughly inspired Jaguars team.

After Northwest’s victory against Seneca Valley in 2000 (tying the series, 1-1), Coach Trivers was quoted on the Gazette saying, "October 6, 2000, will always be remembered as the night that there's a new king crowned in Germantown!"

A 2001 Seneca Valley victory gave the Screamin’ Eagles a lead in the series once again. After the win, SV Head Coach Terry Changuris created and coined the “King’s Trophy.”

And the rest is history….

Jaguars fans rush the field after Northwest's 2000 nailbiter victory at The Black Hole. The win evened the series at 1-1. The victory is significant because it was an indication that Northwest would stay toe-to-toe with one of the most storied programs in Maryland history.
The coaching transition from Terry Changuris to Seneca Valley graduate Fred Kim did not shaken the rivalry. Seneca Valley stayed competitive against Northwest.
Coach Kim was the head jv coach of the 1996-1997 Eagles that consisted of the twenty-seven players that would later play for Northwest.
Randy Trivers (right) coached his final King's Trophy game in 2006. Now, long-time assistant and new Jaguars head coach Andrew Fields (left) looks to keep the Jaguars competitive.

"I've always looked at [starting a program next door to Seneca Valley] as a positive. It's a challenge. We have to see if we can get our program up to that level. And there's no better barometer than those guys."

"We want to get back what we feel is rightfully ours. This is without question the biggest rivalry for us. I really believe that. They have a good team. We think we have a good team. That's what makes a rivalry -- both teams with a chance to win every year." -Fred Kimsource: The Gazette. Oct. 27. 2004
