BECOMING, "THE NORTHWEST JAGUARS"

We formed a student committee during the winter, the year before we opened. This committee was open to anyone coming to the school who wanted to participate. We went through a series of discussions about name for the school, colors and mascot.
Parents were actively involved in the school name, it was mostly students for colors and mascots.
School name: For planning purposes, the school was originally named "Northwest Area"- because of its graphical location of the county map. The main reason the committee recommended "Northwest" as the final name was because it was considered safe. Remember, that Montgomery County was opening many schools at the time. Many schools had serious arguments within the community over the name of the school. The School Board wanted more schools named after women and minorities. Communities were given the opportunity to recommend names. In several instances, the community recommended a name, but the School Board rejected it, creating great controversies. Our community, in 1998 did not want one of these arguments, so they decided on Northwest. A couple of other names that came up, but did not get serious consideration include : Arthur Ashe, Princess Diana (she had just died); Cal Ripkin (he was on pace to break the record for most consecutive games played); Millennium (first graduating class would be 2000).
Colors and mascots were really interesting. The first thing we did was to review all of existing mascots and colors being used by other Montgomery County Schools so that we did not duplicate. For mascot, I insisted that it be positive so things like Bombers, Bandits, Pirates, etc., were not considered although they came up. We did send out cards to every student scheduled to attend the school for a vote--I don't remember how many options we provided.
But, this is where it got interesting: the student vote came down to Jaguars and Black, Blue and Silver.
Now, remember that at the exact same time, students at the new Blake High School were doing the exact same thing. Result, Blake students also voted for Jaguars and Black, Blue and Silver! Now what are the odds on that? Anyway, the principal at Blake, Ms. Carole Goodman and I were faced with a major dilemma--we could not both have the same colors and same mascot. So, we actually flipped a coin (I am not sure how many people know that.) I won the toss, so I decided to make the mascot the priority and took Jaguars. Mrs. Goodman then got the first choice on colors and decided on Black, Blue and Silver for Blake. I then went back to the student committee and they took the choice that had received the second most votes--black, white and silver.
